Step-by-step: the self-publishing process
Write and edit your manuscript
A children's picture book is typically 500–1,000 words for ages 3–8, structured across 32 pages. The text needs to work with illustration — each spread (two facing pages) usually covers one scene or one clear moment in the story.
Before you commission or generate illustrations, the manuscript should be in final or near-final form. Changes to text after layout is complete create expensive rework.
- Reading level: For picture books (ages 3–8), aim for simple sentences, strong verbs, and repetition.
- Page turns: Each page turn should give the reader a reason to keep going — a question, a surprise, or a change of scene.
- Text placement: Decide where text will sit relative to illustrations. Plan this at manuscript stage, not after artwork is finished.
Create or commission illustrations
A 32-page picture book typically requires 14–16 full illustrations plus a cover. Hiring a professional illustrator costs $3,000–$15,000 and takes 3–9 months depending on their schedule and revision rounds.
The single hardest technical problem in children's book illustration is character consistency — making sure your main character looks the same on every page. This is where many self-publishing projects stall, both with freelancers and with general AI tools.

Design the layout and prepare for print
Layout means placing text and illustrations together on each page and configuring the document to print correctly. There are several technical requirements every self-publisher must understand:
Trim size
The final dimensions of the printed page. Common children's book trim sizes: 8×8", 8.5×8.5", 8.5×11". You must configure your file to match the trim size exactly before uploading to KDP or IngramSpark.
Bleed
Full-bleed illustrations (images that fill the entire page) must extend 0.125" beyond the trim line on all sides. This extra area gets cut off during printing but prevents white edges appearing due to slight alignment variations.
Safe zone / margin
Text and important visual elements should stay at least 0.25"–0.375" inside the trim line. Content placed too close to the edge risks being cut off. KDP and IngramSpark both specify minimum safe margins.
Colour profile
Print uses CMYK colour. Most design software and AI tools work in RGB. Your final PDF must be converted to CMYK before upload, or colours will look different in print than on screen. Always order a physical proof copy before approving for sale.

The three main options for self-publishing children's books:
Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing)
Largest print-on-demand platform. No upfront cost. Your book is available on Amazon within 72 hours. Best for: reaching a large online audience quickly. Royalty: 60% of list price minus printing cost for paperbacks. Standard children's book trim sizes and full-bleed colour printing are supported.
IngramSpark
Wider distribution network including independent bookstores, libraries, and international retailers. Setup fee applies (currently $49 per title, waived periodically). Better print quality options including hardcover. Best for: authors wanting bookstore distribution, not just online sales.
Barnes & Noble Press
Free to use. Distributes to Barnes & Noble's online store and some physical locations. Smaller audience than KDP but useful for authors targeting US readers specifically. Supports standard trim sizes and colour interior printing.

ISBN, pricing, and royalties
Every published book needs an ISBN (International Standard Book Number). KDP provides a free ISBN, but you do not own it — meaning you cannot use that ISBN on any other platform. For wide distribution, purchase your own ISBN through Bowker in the US or Nielsen in the UK. A single ISBN costs around $125 USD; a block of 10 is $295.
Children's picture books typically sell for $12–$22 in print. After printing costs and platform royalties, self-published authors typically earn $2–$7 per copy sold. Higher royalties come from selling directly (your own website) or through IngramSpark with a higher list price.
