Why KDP uploads fail for children's books
Amazon KDP is the most accessible self-publishing platform, but it has strict technical requirements for colour print books. The most common reasons children's book uploads are rejected or produce poor print results:
Missing bleed
Full-bleed illustrations must extend 0.125" beyond the trim edge on all sides. Files submitted without bleed print with white borders.
Text in the safe zone
Text placed within 0.25" of the trim line gets cut off in printing. KDP will flag this as a warning but may still print the file.
RGB instead of CMYK
KDP converts RGB to CMYK automatically, but the result is often less saturated and visually different than the screen preview. Always convert to CMYK before uploading.
Low resolution images
KDP requires illustrations at 300 DPI minimum at print size. Low-res images appear soft or pixelated on the physical book.
Wrong trim size in the PDF
